Childhood Cancer Awareness

September is Childhood Cancer and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Month

Cancer in children and adolescents is rare and biologically very different from cancer in adults. It is estimated that about 148000 cancers occurred during 2008 in children aged 0–14 years in less-developed regions. In India cancer is the 9th common cause for the deaths among children between  5  to  14 years of age. The proportion of childhood cancers relative to all cancers reported by Indian cancer registries varied from  0.8%  to  5.8%  in boys, and from 0.5% to 3.4% in girls. Some shocking statistics of Indian children are given below:

So be aware and don’t be ignorant, this can happen to anyone at any age.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma — formerly known as Hodgkin’s disease — is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system.

In Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin’s lymphoma progresses, it compromises your body’s ability to fight infection.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of two common types of cancers of the lymphatic system. The other type, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is far more common. Advances in diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma have helped give people with this diagnosis the chance for a full recovery. The prognosis continues to improve for people with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

I would not comment much on it and let Harteij comment, he is a fighter and Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. Salute to you buddy; take a bow.
